Embracing Equity Leadership Residency

2020 - 2021 Blended Leadership Development Program

What is this?

The Embracing Equity Leadership Residency is a national anti-racist leadership residency that upends the oppressive systems of schooling through a process of individual learning and collective healing for racial justice in education. This leadership development program builds the capacity and skills in YOU to be able to deliver a customized DEI strategy and curriculum to your team.

We envision and work toward a future of resilient and liberatory educational systems in which children and their communities are whole, self-sustaining, and thriving.

What’s the problem?

Access to a comprehensive curriculum and robust community of practice is cited by education leaders as one of the biggest constraints to transforming schools as sites of educational equity:

  • Efforts towards educational equity are largely framed around student outcomes rather than the adult mindsets, ideologies, and foundational knowledge to engage in a practice of cultural dexterity and seeing the outcome of learning as additive by critically enriching strengths rather than replacing deficits

  • DEI work is often limited to a one-five day experience that doesn’t carry over into the long-term work of the institution

  • DEI work is often relegated to one person to hold as a DEI Officer without structural support or accountability

  • Existing approaches, focused on adding new talent to the sector or bringing in consultants for a limited engagement, have had limited impact at the systemic level due to high training/development costs.

Why should I join the Leadership Residency?

Across the country, education leaders are working hard so every child has an excellent and equitable education. Yet, deep, sustained and scale-able transformations have been elusive. We’ve solved for this with our Leadership Residency: We partner directly with the leaders of an organization to approach the work from the inside-out to break down barriers and connect organizations to the needs of the people inside them.

What will I gain from participating in the Embracing Equity Leadership Residency?

Embracing Equity works with educational leaders in building foundational knowledge and engaging in critical action in three distinct areas:

Internal: We will prepare educational leaders in healing their internalized oppression & privilege, developing a critical consciousness, understanding the legacy of racism in schooling, and reclaiming a positive racial and ethnic identity.

Interpersonal: We will draw on the wisdom and expertise of educational leaders to cultivate a strategic, cross-racial community of practice for racial justice that fosters self-efficacy, solidarity and accountability.

Institutional: We will equip educational leaders with an emancipatory vision of schooling that reframes the object of critique from our children to the oppressive systems in which we all live. Education leaders will transform institutions by reimagining practices, policies, and procedures to foster racial justice and positive social transformation.
