Empowered Anti-Racist Leadership: Introducing the 2021 Cohort

Imagine a world in which racism has been dismantled one organization at a time, led by leaders who understand how their multiple and intersecting identities and positionalities impact and inform their work. Where leaders have the critical knowledge, capacities and skills to create culturally sustaining and anti-racist climates within their organizations. Where they have meaningful data from their staff and teams, often voices of those most marginalized, to assist in setting and achieving equity goals that matter.

  • What if all leaders had an anti-racist community across the country to solicit peer-to-peer support?
  • What if all leaders were nurtured in their individual growth?
  • What if all leaders were guided to develop anti-racist systems, structures, and protocols in their organizations, all in service of the children, families, and communities they serve?

Is all this even possible?

Yes! We at Embracing Equity not only believe that it is possible, we know it is!

Embracing Equity started our Leadership Residency in 2020 to make this dream a reality. The Leadership Residency brings together leaders from across the country who want to embed racial equity and racial justice in their organizations. This 16-month Residency supports leaders as they center anti-racism in their own leadership as well as their organizational cultures, climates, systems, and structures.

““The Embracing Equity Leadership Residency is precisely what we need in leadership and professional development - to prepare leaders through an anti-racist, anti-bias framework and create the capacity for organizational and cultural change within your organization [emphasis on within]. The Leadership Residency supports you in embedding this critical work within your role, rather than looking outside yourself - to the DEI officer - or your organization for the answers.”

— Jess D., 2020 Leadership Resident

MEET OUR 2021 COHORT

Building upon the successes of our 2020 Cohort, we are excited to welcome 22 educational leaders from across the country in our new 2021 Leadership Residency Cohort — 100% of whom are women, 70% are Women of the Global Majority, 84% are school and district leaders, and 16% are leading nonprofits.

We invite you to meet them and keep your eyes on their transformational work! It is possible. We are here and we are ready to embrace equity with you.

““Disruptive, reflective & powerful self examination of how we participate in the simultaneous propping up and dismantling of oppressive social systems. We are both oppressor and oppressed. Embracing Equity helps one respect the paradox of that positionality towards holistic impact.”

— Jimmy J., 2020 Leadership Resident

A Personal Note From Our Founder

2024 has been one of our most dynamic years as we took a big step toward sustainability, despite setbacks with fundraising, despite this Presidential election. We’re fortifying our roots as an anti-racist, DEI education movement that will persist and heal — even when we are scared. We are with you in feeling uncertain and frankly scared, for the future of our country. But we know this much to be true: Embracing Equity will continue to be on the front lines of DEI and will now be a critical resource in filling the government gaps and, in the worst-case scenario, navigating government persecution for implementing DEI efforts. We are more committed than ever to embrace equity, to build inclusive communities, and to make space for everyone at the table.
